🇪🇺 Western Europe
Study in Austria
Mandatory student insurance: Join ÖGK for €78.84/month or use private insurance. EU students can use EHIC.
Study in Belgium
All residents must register with a mutualité/ziekenfonds. Students pay heavily subsidized rates: €0–€20/month.
Study in France
All students register with French Social Security (Sécurité Sociale) for free. Top-up mutuelle recommended for full coverage.
Study in Germany
Germany requires all students to have health insurance. Choose between public (GKV) and private coverage.
Study in the Netherlands
Complex but manageable: Dutch basic insurance required if working >16h/week. Otherwise, international student insurance accepted.
Study in Switzerland
Swiss health insurance (KVG) is mandatory for all residents within 3 months of arrival. Student premiums range CHF 200–450/month depending on canton and deductible. EU/EFTA students may apply for exemption.

Study in Croatia
Very affordable! HZZO student rate ~€15/month or private from €20/month. EU students can use EHIC for free access.
Study in Greece
EU students use EHIC for free ESY access. Non-EU students need affordable private insurance from €15/month.
Study in Italy
Non-EU students can register with the Italian National Health Service (SSN) from €149.77/year (scholarship holders) or €700/year, or use private insurance.
Study in Portugal
Register with SNS (Portuguese National Health Service) for mostly free care. Small co-pays €4–€18. Optional private from €25/month.
Study in Spain
Spain requires international students to have valid health insurance for visa applications and TIE/NIE registration. Costs range from €35–120/month depending on provider and coverage.
🌊 Scandinavia
Study in Denmark
Get CPR number and yellow health card for free healthcare. EU students can use EHIC. Optional private insurance for extras.
Study in Finland
Degree students use FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service) for €36.80/semester. Non-EU need private insurance for residence permit.
Study in Norway
Register with Norwegian National Insurance (Folketrygden) for free healthcare. Non-EU students need valid insurance before arrival.
Study in Sweden
EU/EEA students covered with EHIC. Non-EU students staying >1 year register with Försäkringskassan via personnummer. Shorter stays require private insurance (SEK 400–800/month).

Study in the Czech Republic
Non-EU students need Czech commercial insurance (CZK 7,000–13,000/year ≈ €280–520). EU students can use EHIC.
Study in Hungary
Stipendium Hungaricum students get free coverage. Self-funded students need insurance from ~HUF 8,000/month (~€20). EU students can use EHIC.
Study in Poland
One of Europe's most affordable study destinations. NFZ voluntary insurance ~€13/month or private from ~€25/month. EU students can use EHIC.
Study in Romania
Extremely affordable! CNAS public insurance ~€20/month or private from €10/month. EU students can use EHIC.

Australia requires all international students on a Student Visa (subclass 500) to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
Study in China
China requires all international students to purchase comprehensive health insurance — at remarkably low costs compared to Western countries.
Study in India
India has no single mandatory national health insurance for international students — but most universities require enrollment in their group health scheme on arrival.
Study in Japan
Japan offers one of the world's best healthcare systems — and international students get full access through the affordable National Health Insurance.
Study in Malaysia
Malaysia requires all international students to have health insurance as part of their university enrollment — arranged through EMGS and tied to the Student Pass.

New Zealand requires private health insurance for all international students — but the country's ACC system already covers you for any accident from day one.

Singapore's universities provide mandatory health insurance as part of student fees — giving international students access to one of Asia's finest healthcare systems.

South Korea's NHIS provides comprehensive healthcare to international students — mandatory enrollment since 2021 ensures everyone is covered.

Thailand has excellent private hospitals — but no public insurance scheme covers foreign students. You need private coverage before you arrive.

Study in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia requires all foreign students to hold CCHI-compliant health insurance — a mandatory condition for your student visa (D1), Iqama issuance, and university enrollment.
Study in Turkey
Turkey requires international students to have health insurance for their residence permit (ikamet izni). The state SGK system is affordable — ₺2,200/year (~€65) — and covers the basics well.
Study in the UAE
The UAE mandates health insurance for all residence visa holders. International students must have DHA-compliant or DoH-compliant coverage before their residence permit is issued.
