🇪🇺Western Europe

Study in Austria
Health insurance is mandatory. Most students join the ÖGK Studierendenselbstversicherung for €78.84/month (2026). EU/EEA students use their EHIC. Non-EU students need cover for the residence permit.

Study in Belgium
Health insurance is compulsory in Belgium. EU/EEA students use EHIC; non-EU students join a mutualité (≈€79/quarter + €100–120/year membership) within four months of arrival.

Study in France
All students register with French Social Security (Sécurité Sociale) for free via etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr. It reimburses ~70% — a mutuelle top-up (€10–50/month) covers the rest.

Study in Germany
Germany requires all students to have health insurance. Choose between public (GKV) and private coverage.

Study in the Netherlands
Study-only students cannot use Dutch public insurance: EU students use EHIC, non-EU students buy private cover (~€40/mo). Dutch basisverzekering (€159/mo) is only mandatory once you work or do a paid internship.

Study in Switzerland
Swiss health insurance (KVG) is mandatory for all residents within 3 months of arrival. Student premiums range CHF 200–450/month depending on canton and deductible. EU/EFTA students may apply for exemption.
🇬🇧UK & Ireland

Study in Ireland
Non-EU students MUST have private health insurance to register for the IRP (min €25,000 accident + €25,000 disease cover, from ~€160/year). EU/EEA students use EHIC for HSE access.

Study in the UK
Access the NHS by paying the Immigration Health Surcharge. Optional private insurance for faster access and extra coverage.
🌍Southern Europe

Study in Croatia
EU/EEA students covered free with EHIC. Non-EU students register with HZZO (~€70–110/month) within 8 days of arrival, or buy private insurance (€30,000+ cover) for the residence permit.

Study in Greece
EU students use EHIC for free ESY access. Non-EU students need private insurance from €30/month with €30,000 minimum coverage for the residence permit.

Study in Italy
Non-EU students register with Italy's National Health Service (SSN) for a €700/year flat fee, or buy private insurance from about €20/month. EU students use their EHIC.

Study in Portugal
EU students use EHIC for immediate SNS access. Non-EU students need private insurance (€30–€60/month) for the visa and AIMA, then register free with the SNS after arrival.

Study in Spain
Spain requires international students to have valid health insurance for visa applications and TIE/NIE registration. Costs range from €35–120/month depending on provider and coverage.
🌊Scandinavia

Study in Denmark
Stays over 3 months unlock free tax-funded healthcare via a CPR number and yellow health card (sundhedskort). EU students use EHIC. Cover the 2–4 week registration gap with private insurance.

Study in Finland
Degree students pay the FSHS healthcare fee of €70.70/year to Kela. Non-EU students need private insurance (€120,000 coverage) for the residence permit. EU/EEA students use EHIC.

Study in Norway
EU/EEA students covered with EHIC. Non-EU students staying over 12 months join Folketrygden automatically. Shorter stays need private insurance (€40–80/month) before arrival.

Study in Sweden
EU/EEA students covered with EHIC. Non-EU students staying >1 year register with Försäkringskassan via personnummer. Shorter stays require private insurance (SEK 400–800/month).
🏔️Central & Eastern Europe

Study in the Czech Republic
Non-EU students need Czech comprehensive insurance (CZK 10,000–18,000/year ≈ €400–730) with a €400,000 limit. EU students use EHIC. PVZP's monopoly ended in 2023 — you can now choose any authorized insurer.

Study in Hungary
Stipendium Hungaricum students get free coverage. Self-funded students need insurance from ~HUF 8,000/month (~€20). EU students can use EHIC.

Study in Poland
One of Europe's most affordable study destinations. NFZ voluntary insurance ~€13/month or private from ~€25/month. EU students can use EHIC.

Study in Romania
One of Europe's most affordable destinations. Students under 26 get free CNAS public healthcare; over-26s pay ~€15/month. EU students use EHIC; non-EU students need €30,000 private cover for the residence permit.

Study in Australia
Australia requires all international students on a Student Visa (subclass 500) to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

Study in China
China requires all international students to purchase comprehensive health insurance — at remarkably low costs compared to Western countries.

Study in India
India has no single mandatory national health insurance for international students — but most universities require enrollment in their group health scheme on arrival.

Study in Japan
Japan offers one of the world's best healthcare systems — and international students get full access through the affordable National Health Insurance.

Study in Malaysia
Malaysia requires all international students to have health insurance as part of their university enrollment — arranged through EMGS and tied to the Student Pass.

Study in New Zealand
New Zealand requires private health insurance for all international students — but the country's ACC system already covers you for any accident from day one.

Study in Singapore
Singapore's universities provide mandatory health insurance as part of student fees — giving international students access to one of Asia's finest healthcare systems.

Study in South Korea
South Korea's NHIS provides comprehensive healthcare to international students — mandatory enrollment since 2021 ensures everyone is covered.

Study in Thailand
Thailand has excellent private hospitals — but no public insurance scheme covers foreign students. You need private coverage before you arrive.
🕌Middle East & Africa

Study in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia requires all foreign students to hold CCHI-compliant health insurance — a mandatory condition for your student visa (D1), Iqama issuance, and university enrollment.

Study in Turkey
Turkey requires international students to have health insurance for their residence permit (ikamet izni). The state SGK system is affordable — ₺2,200/year (~€65) — and covers the basics well.

Study in the UAE
The UAE mandates health insurance for all residence visa holders. International students must have DHA-compliant or DoH-compliant coverage before their residence permit is issued.
