Summary
Our own website code sets no cookies for marketing or session management, and your theme preference is stored in localStorage (not a cookie). However, two services set first-party cookies on our domain — only after you accept them via our cookie banner:
- Google Analytics 4 (via Cloudflare Zaraz) — analytics (see below).
- Mediavine Grow — audience-engagement widget (see below).
A strictly necessary cookie stores your consent choice. Our other analytics tools (Plausible, PostHog) remain fully cookieless.
What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website (or a service embedded on it) stores on your device when you visit. On our site, cookies are set only by consented analytics (Google Analytics 4 via Cloudflare Zaraz) and the Mediavine Grow widget, plus a strictly necessary cookie that remembers your consent choice.
Local Storage (Not a Cookie)
We use the browser's built-in localStorage for one feature only:
| Key | Purpose | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| theme | Stores your preferred color scheme (light/dark) | localStorage (not a cookie) |
localStorage entries are kept locally in your browser and are never transmitted to our servers. You can clear them at any time via your browser's developer tools or by clearing site data.
Analytics
We use Plausible Analytics and PostHog for website analytics. Both are configured in cookieless and anonymized mode — they set no cookies, store no IP addresses, and collect no personally identifiable information, so they require no consent.
We also use Google Analytics 4 (GA4), loaded via Cloudflare Zaraz. GA4 sets a first-party cookie on our domain (cfz_google-analytics_v4, plus the session cookie cfzs_google-analytics_v4) that stores a pseudonymous client ID and session data to recognize returning visitors and measure sessions. GA4 runs only after you consent via our cookie banner (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR); you can withdraw your consent at any time. Event data is forwarded to Google and may involve EU↔US transfers (EU-US Data Privacy Framework / SCCs).
Mediavine Grow
We use Mediavine Grow (the "Grow" / "Faves" widget) by Mediavine, Inc. (USA) to provide audience-engagement features (such as saving and bookmarking articles) and to support our content. When the Grow script loads or you interact with it, it may set first-party cookies and local storage entries on your device, generate a device or visitor identifier, and process usage data. If you sign in to the Faves feature, Mediavine also processes your account data (e.g. email address).
Where consent is required (for example in the EU/EEA), it is collected through Mediavine's own Consent Management Platform (CMP), which Mediavine displays to visitors in regulated regions. You can also block or delete these cookies and local storage at any time via your browser settings (see below). More information: Mediavine Privacy Policy.
Marketing Cookies
We do not set any marketing, advertising, or tracking cookies ourselves. Cookies that may be set by the Mediavine Grow widget — and, in the future, by Mediavine ads — are subject to consent via Mediavine's CMP as described above.
How to Clear localStorage
If you ever want to reset your theme preference or other local data, you can clear browser site data:
