FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about HanseMerkur Young Travel
Young Travel is a travel health insurance product — not a substitutive comprehensive health insurance. It works for language courses, au pair stays, internships, and short-term exchange programs. For full degree programs requiring substitutive coverage, consider Provisit Student, MAWISTA Student, or statutory insurance (GKV).
Basic is health-only with limited benefits: €250 dental cap, 80% medication, no mental health, limited pregnancy (€250/year). Profi adds 100% dental (including €2,000/year prosthetics), 100% medication, psychotherapy (€1,000/year, 5 sessions), full pregnancy coverage, plus accident insurance (€60k disability), liability (€2.5M), and cancer screening. Profi costs about €17/month more.
Young Travel uses daily pricing: Basic costs €1.19/day (~€36/month) and Profi costs €1.75/day (~€53/month) for the first 12 months. From month 13, rates increase to €1.65/day (~€50/month) for Basic and €2.15/day (~€65/month) for Profi. All prices are for ages under 35.
Pre-existing conditions are covered with limitations: you must pay €5,000 as a personal contribution, and the maximum benefit is capped at €30,000. There is also a 31-day general waiting period, which is waived if you enroll within 31 days of entering Germany.
Young Travel is visa-compliant for German entry visas and Schengen visas. However, it may not meet the requirements for long-term student residence permits that require substitutive health insurance (Krankenversicherungspflicht). Check with your university and immigration office.
