Frequently asked questions
How much does German public health insurance cost for students in 2026?
As a student you pay somewhere between €137 and €151 per month in 2026, depending on which public insurer you pick. The base rate is the same for every insurer (€87.38). Each insurer adds its own supplementary rate on top. And there’s long-term care insurance — 3.6% if you are under 23 or have children, 4.2% otherwise.
Which public insurer is cheapest for students in 2026?
Among insurers that accept you nationwide, hkk and TK are the cheapest right now. Your actual price still depends on your age, children and federal state. Enter your details above — the calculator shows you your cheapest option live.
How is my monthly contribution calculated?
By law, every student is counted as earning a fixed €855 per month for this calculation. Your insurer takes about 10% of that as a base rate, plus its own small supplementary rate on top. Then long-term care insurance is added. From your second child under 25, long-term care gets a bit cheaper per child — about 0.25% off per child, up to a 1% cap.
Can I switch public insurers as an international student?
Yes, and it’s easy. A switch usually takes 14 days. After that you stay with your new insurer for 12 months. Medical coverage is identical everywhere — the law sets the rules. What differs is the price, the app, bonus programs and the quality of English support.
What happens when I turn 30 or pass 14 semesters?
Your cheap student rate ends. You can stay in public insurance, but you now pay based on an assumed income of at least €1,248 per month — that’s usually €250 per month more. At that point private student insurance is often cheaper — worth comparing.
Are language-course students covered by public health insurance?
No. The cheap student rate only applies once you are enrolled at a university. Language-course students need private health insurance for the course — starting at around €33 per month.
