Cost if you take SHIP
The 2026-27 premium for the NYU Sponsored Student Health Insurance – Basic Plan and Comprehensive Plan (Aetna Student Health) is $4,747–$5,397 a year (student only). It is billed to your student account unless your waiver is approved.
Annual student total cost, Aug 21, 2026 – Aug 20, 2027: Basic $4,747 and Comprehensive $5,397. Each includes a $29 administrative fee (premium alone: $4,718 / $5,368). Rates are for Washington Square; Tandon, Shanghai and Abu Dhabi have separate brochures.
Waiver deadline
Submit your waiver request before the deadline above. Universities rarely accept late waivers — if you miss it, you are auto-enrolled in SHIP and billed the full premium.
Waiver requirements
According to New York University, your alternative plan must meet these criteria (summarised — the official list is binding):
- Insurer headquartered in the US with US claims address and phone
- In force for the full policy period (fall entry: Aug 21 – Aug 20)
- Inpatient and outpatient care in the NYC area, not emergency-only
- Unlimited maximum benefit
- F-1/J-1: no pre-existing condition waiting period; deductible up to $1,500 per year
- F-1/J-1: medical evacuation at least $50,000; repatriation at least $25,000
