Cost if you take SHIP
The 2026-27 premium for the SJSU International Student Health Insurance Plan - Medical High Student Plan (UnitedHealthcare Student Resources, CSU program via Alliant) is $2,006 a year (student only). It is billed to your student account unless your waiver is approved.
Fall $845 (08/01/26-12/31/26) + Spring/Summer $1,161 (01/01/27-07/31/27) = $2,006; the flyer notes rates are subject to regulatory approval.
Waiver deadline
Submit your waiver request before the deadline above. Universities rarely accept late waivers — if you miss it, you are auto-enrolled in SHIP and billed the full premium.
Waiver requirements
According to San José State University, your alternative plan must meet these criteria (summarised — the official list is binding):
- Only government-sponsored F-1 students with compatible insurance in their sponsorship
- Or dependents on a US employer plan, who must add evacuation/repatriation cover
- Or J-1 students in the ISEP exchange program
- Not eligible: students who are the primary holder of their own employer plan
