Waiver requirements

According to Stony Brook University, your alternative plan must meet these criteria (summarised — the official list is binding):

  • Comparable coverage that meets the University's required standards
  • Out-of-state Medicaid plans and the NY Essential Plan are not accepted
  • Named insurers rejected, e.g. ISO, HTH Worldwide, IMG, GeoBlue, Seven Corners, Compass
  • Also rejected: Kimber Health, ISP, UHC PGH/Student Resources, Tokio Marine HCC

What a waiver can save

Your saving is the Stony Brook University SHIP premium ($2,403.01 a year) minus the price of a private plan the university accepts. Private plans in our comparison start at $33/month ($396/year) for the youngest age band; plans that meet strict waiver criteria usually cost more. Compare the real price of the plan you would submit before you decide.

Notes: International students are enrolled in the SUNY-mandated UnitedHealthcare plan; waivers go through Haylor, Freyer & Coon and many international-student insurers are explicitly rejected. Without a waiver by the deadline the plan is billed and can no longer be waived for that semester.
