Cost if you take SHIP
The 2026-27 premium for the University of Minnesota Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) is $3,590 a year (student only). It is billed to your student account unless your waiver is approved.
$1,795 per semester (fall, spring); spring coverage includes summer (Jan 19 - Aug 22, 2027), so 2 x $1,795 = $3,590. A summer-only term costs $915.
Waiver deadline
Submit your waiver request before the deadline above. Universities rarely accept late waivers — if you miss it, you are auto-enrolled in SHIP and billed the full premium.
Waiver requirements
University of Minnesota does not allow waivers for most international students. Review the exceptions below and budget for the full SHIP premium.
- F-1 students may waive only with a US-based employer-sponsored group plan
- Or if enrolled in the University's Graduate Assistant Health Plan (GAHP)
- Or if residing in their home country (proof of presence required)
