Waiver requirements

Vanderbilt University does not allow waivers for most international students. Review the exceptions below and budget for the full SHIP premium.

  • International students: only comparable US-based employer coverage (own or dependent's employer)
  • Marketplace individual, travel and home-country employer plans not accepted
  • ACA-compliant, US-based insurer with US phone and address
  • Unlimited access to providers within 25 miles of campus
  • At least 80% coverage, no lifetime maximum; in-network deductible max $1,000
  • Medical evacuation $50,000 and repatriation $25,000 for international students

What a waiver can save

Your saving is the Vanderbilt University SHIP premium ($2,724–$4,484 a year) minus the price of a private plan the university accepts. Private plans in our comparison start at $33/month ($396/year) for the youngest age band; plans that meet strict waiver criteria usually cost more. Compare the real price of the plan you would submit before you decide.

Notes: International students are auto-enrolled; a waiver is only possible with US-based employer coverage, so in practice most F-1/J-1 students cannot waive. Carrier is UnitedHealthcare.
