Cost if you take SHIP

The 2026-27 premium for the IU International Student Insurance Plan (Anthem, administered by University Health Plans) is $2,044 a year (student only). It is billed to your student account unless your waiver is approved.

Student premium for Aug 1, 2026 - Jul 31, 2027 (Fall $856.80 + Spring/Summer $1,187.20), billed to the bursar account each semester. The mandatory IU Bloomington health center fee is separate and is not insurance.

Submit your waiver request before the deadline above. Universities rarely accept late waivers — if you miss it, you are auto-enrolled in SHIP and billed the full premium.

Waiver requirements

Indiana University Bloomington does not allow waivers for most international students. Review the exceptions below and budget for the full SHIP premium.

• Automatic: grad assistants/fellows on another IU plan; sponsor-provided approved cover
• Request: J-1 exchange students whose sponsor provides J-1-compliant insurance
• Request: plan from spouse's/parent's US employer, or own US employer on CPT/OPT
• J-1 plans: $100,000 per illness/accident; deductible $500 or less
• J-1 plans: medical evacuation $50,000 and repatriation $25,000
