Cost if you take SHIP
Annual premium for the Yale Health Hospitalization/Specialty Coverage is approximately $3,200–$3,800 USD for the 2025 academic year. This is billed directly to your student account unless you successfully waive.
Waiver deadline
Submit your waiver request before the deadline above. Universities rarely accept late waivers — if you miss it, you are auto-enrolled in SHIP and billed the full premium.
Waiver requirements
Your alternative plan must meet all of the following criteria to pass the Yale University waiver review:
- Comparable major medical coverage
- Access to care in New Haven / Connecticut
- Coverage for hospitalization, specialty care and mental health
- No annual or lifetime cap under $500,000
- Valid for the full enrollment period
Alternative plans that typically qualify
International students at US universities commonly use these plans to pass SHIP waiver reviews. Always confirm that the specific plan you buy meets your university's minimum standards:
- GeoBlue Navigator — strong US network, high benefit limits, passes most Ivy League waivers
- ISO Student Health Insurance — US-based claims, affordable monthly rates, widely accepted
- IMG Patriot Exchange — designed for F-1/J-1 students, meets most ISSS minimum standards
- Student Secure (WorldTrips) — competitive pricing, US network, frequent waiver approvals
Estimated savings
A successfully approved waiver at Yale University typically saves international students $2,300–3,000/year. Savings vary based on the alternative plan you choose — the more competitive your replacement plan, the more you save.
